Rules and regulations regarding firearms and ammunition transportation

Provisions of the law

Transport of weapons, firearms and ammunition is governed by special provisions and regulations set out under Italian law (Law 694 / 23rd December, 1974). According to art. 30 of the public safety law (Royal Decree no. 773 of June 18, 1931) “arms” means the weapons themselves, i.e. firearms and any other weapons designed or made for use against persons, including bladed and pointed instruments (knives, daggers etc.).

How they are transported

Firearms and ammunition whose transportation is subject to regulations issued by the Police in compliance with the existing laws, must always be declared upon booking the flight and will only be accepted as checked-in baggage tagged to their final destination as long as:

  • Weapons are unloaded, dismantled and pace in properly locked containers
  • Ammunition is:
    • In a quantity not exceeding 5 Kg. (11 lb.) per passenger
    • Properly protected against impact and sudden movements
    • Packed in suitable metal, wooden or fibre containers provided with safety locks and impact and fire-resistant
    • Transported for sporting reasons

Transport of ammunition with incendiary or explosive shells is strictly forbidden.

Upon request and on paying a fee, Air One will provide passengers suitable containers for small weapons and ammunition not exceeding the following dimensions: 30x22x8 cm.

Due to the specific nature of these items, passengers will be given all necessary information about police regulations as well as any customs formalities. This will enable you to prepare the required documentation to avoid any dispute with Authorities during your journey.

Transit within the Italian territory

If your journey includes a connecting flight arriving in or departing from Italy, your firearms, ammunition and weapons will be cleared through customs at the Italian ingoing or outgoing airport even if they are meant for another final destination be it within the Italian territory or abroad.

Upon arrival, your firearms and ammunition will be escorted by Air One personnel or their representative to the airport police station where they will be returned to the owner's custody.
